(Reuters) – A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order on Friday blocking a New Jersey law that would have allowed legal betting on sporting events.
The law would allow sports betting at state-licensed casinos and racetracks. Chris Christie, a Republican, signed a few days earlier.
Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said New Jersey plans to keep fighting the lawsuit.
“We continue to have full confidence in the strength and appropriateness of our position as we move forward in the litigation,” he said in a statement.
A lawyer for the sports leagues confirmed the temporary order, but declined to comment further.

Monmouth Park, a thoroughbred race track in Oceanport, had planned to offer sports betting on Sunday.
The National Football League and other sports leagues sued on Monday in an attempt to block the law that New Jersey Gov. The sports leagues said it violated a federal sports gambling ban and argued they would suffer irreparable harm if the law went into effect.

But until now, lawmakers on Capitol Hill have tried to inhibit millions of Americans from participating in the popular game with other players online.
But the industry has repeatedly lobbied Congress to clarify the rules and loosen restrictions on some forms of online gaming, including poker.
More than 2,000 websites currently offer users the chance to wager real cash in games of skill and chance, including poker, according to the American Gaming Association. But then in the online space, there are all these unregulated, unlicensed, untaxed groups running internet gaming,” Feldman said.
A draft bill, first reported by the Wall Street Journal and obtained by ABC News, would legalize online poker playing in the U.S., and establish licensing and reporting requirements for companies, as well as safeguards for consumers. But most of them are run by offshore companies, industry experts say.
Gamble on Online Gaming No Safe Bet
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 indirectly outlawed online gambling in the U.S. It would also generate tax revenue from wagers, for state and federal governments.
That prospect has several leading Republicans — who are opposed to legalization of internet gambling without public hearings — up in arms.
After the midterm election, in which Las Vegas-based casinos were some of the major donors to the reelection of Nevada Democratic Sen. by making it illegal to use a credit card or checking account to place electronic bets.
An estimated 15 million Americans play online poker for money through sites run out of foreign countries, according to the Poker Players Alliance.
Republican Reps. “There are no consumer protections, no standards for licensing, no rules on operations,” said Alan Feldman, a spokesman for MGM Resorts International, who noted internet gambling is widespread across the U.S. despite federal law.
Legalization of online poker forums has long been sought by the U.S. casino industry which says federal gaming regulations have unfairly handicapped their business in a flourishing online marketplace and left American consumers vulnerable.
Forms of online gambling other than poker would remain prohibited under the bill.
Poker has been played by presidents and partisans alike for generations. Harry Reid, some speculate the legislation stands a renewed chance at passage.
Gary Thompson, spokesman for Caesars Entertainment Corp., the country’s largest gaming company, said he could not comment on the bill because of an SEC-mandated “quiet period,” but acknowledged the industry has favored a change in the law.. Spencer Bachus of the House Financial Services Committee, Dave Camp of the Ways Means Committee, and Lamar Smith of the Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell last week opposing the measure, which was being circulated quietly on the Hill.
“It’s a sloppy wet kiss to Nevada casinos,” said a senior Republican staffer familiar with the legislation who asked to remain anonymous.
Now some lawmakers want to allow U.S.-based casino companies to get into the game — and a cut of the $25 billion-a-year pie — by quietly pushing for a change in the law before the end of this year.
The company makes a little over a quarter of its turnover in Japan and about a quarter in France.
Riccardi declined to say what her objectives for the year were aside from improving the company’s profitability.
Baccarat shares, which have lost 5 percent so far this year after climbing 32 percent in 2013, closed up nearly 4 percent on Thursday at 216.95 euros, giving the company a market value of 180.2 million euros.
Riccardi said the maker of crystal glasses, jewellery and bottles for spirits such as cognac had been hit hard by China’s anti-corruption measures, which dented cognac sales in the country.
PARIS (Reuters) – Baccarat (CDBP.PA) sales are expected to remain in decline this year as market conditions deteriorate in Europe even more than in 2013, the head of the French crystal specialist told the company’s annual general meeting on Thursday.
Last year, Baccarat’s sales fell 6.3 percent to 106.5 million euros ($144.7 million), and its 2012 operating profit of 4.68 million was followed by a loss of 6.67 million.
“The situation has worsened in Europe progressively and this year even more so than last year,” Baccarat Chief Executive Daniela Riccardi said.
($1 = 0.7359 Euros)
Baccarat said Riccardi’s base salary and bonus for 2014, based on meeting certain objectives, would total 1.5 million euros, and that she would receive 165,000 euros in rent allowance and 35,000 euros for her children’s education together with other expenses such as a car.
“If this situation does not improve, it will be very difficult for us to have positive growth in reported terms,” she said, adding that the yen’s weakness against the euro was also a problem for the company.
. Riccardi said she hoped moves to prune Baccarat’s product portfolio to 1,000 items from 6,000, coupled with marketing around the brand’s 250th anniversary this year would eventually bear fruit and help it return to growth, both in terms of sales and profit.
However, she said that if market trends remained the same, “it would be complicated for us” to return to profit at the net and operating level in 2014.
She also said Baccarat’s jewellery sales, which fell 11 percent last year, had suffered from delays to product deliveries.

Riccardi, who also sits on the board of Gucci-owner Kering (PRTP.PA) and previously worked for Diesel and Procter Gamble, joined Baccarat a year ago, following a succession of CEOs at the company’s helm since 2006.
She added that Baccarat, which is controlled by investment firms Starwood Capital and Catterton Partners, planned to open a luxury hotel in New York in December.
The CEO said the yen’s depreciation against the euro hit sales last year, once translated into euros, even though they grew in underlying terms
But I feel like these kids’ books need some subversive element. We considered writing a sequel, but we both have full-time jobs and many children between us, so we decided to do something different.
You do if the book is The Rookie Bookie, which uses the fresh, somewhat edgy topic of a seventh-grader running a football betting ring to teach young readers about finance and investing. We both have daughters, and we wanted both genders to read this.
In some ways, it’s a completely different kind of writing. It’s a different exercise than journalism.
Why a young-adult book as the follow-up to Scorecasting?
Tell me about the sports betting plotline. So that had a part in it. Kids know the difference between Monet and Gauguin, and they know state capitals, and they know math, but if you ask, “What is the deficit?” they have no idea. It wasn’t just 35-year-old Sabermetrics types. They can’t all be after-school specials. It was fun.
If you’re the parent of a young, avid reader and sports fan, do you really want your kid to be reading about sports betting?
One nice thing about the book is that, although the main character is a boy, there’s a girl behind him really pulling the strings and teaching him about fantasy football, etc. I gotta say, more of it was just this enormous gap in financial literacy. So there were some things that I would run by my son and he’d say, “No kid would ever say that.” Or I’d say, “Do you know who Warren Buffett is?” And he’d say, “No, tell me.” Neither of us is a kids’ book author, so there was a fair amount of trial and error. Freakonomics was always sort of the model. building to ask him about the book and its origins. You read some of the books that our kids read, and there’s a flirtation with the subversive a lot of times. Jon Wertheim, the executive editor of Sports Illustrated and our colleague here at Time Inc, and Tobias Moskowitz, with whom Wertheim co-wrote the book Scorecasting: The Hidden Influences Behind how Sports are Played and Games are Won in 2012. This is all uncharted terrain for us.
Whether it’s fantasy sports, or being more conversant in stats, you definitely see more and more kids that are comfortable trafficking in data than when Toby and I were growing up. And then, of course, you learn your lesson in the end. Which is so nice. We had a lot of fun with Scorecasting, so then it was just a question of logistics because we both have jobs and other projects. So the inspiration was more the gaps in financial understanding. A lot of kids have probably never heard of Buffett, but he could buy every single sports team and still have money left over. And then it occurred to us, some of the basics of behavioral economics–loss aversion, omission bias–you can kind of explain to 10-, 11-, and 12-year-olds, which is what we have. You’re not waiting around for interviews and phone calls, you just kind of go. What follows is an edited transcript.
Yeah, we didn’t want to just write a boys’ book. Clearly, the two of them still had the stats bug, and sought to apply it in a new setting: young-adult fiction. There’s so little out there about financial literacy for kids. A 12-year-old should get supply and demand.
Were you guys influenced by any specific young-adult books or series?
To what extent did the rise in data journalism lead you to this? There’s FiveThirtyEight, and there’s Vox, and that whole explosion in stats.
The big moral of the story is don’t do this.
How do you know what is too much for kids to understand and what is not? For instance, early on in the book, the protagonist mentions Warren Buffett…
When you wrote Scorecasting, did you guys consciously try to make it easy for young people to understand?
When that book came out, I was surprised how many kids we heard from. It was totally out of our comfort zone, but this was the passion play.
Jon Wertheim: Well, we had written a mainstream, adult non-fiction book, and we were trying to figure out what to do next. It does seem to be this huge gap, and we said let’s try this: We’ll write a fun story and we’ll embed some sort of behavioral economics basics, and who knows. So we needed a little bit of a detour to the dark side. Fortune sat down with Wertheim here in the Time Inc. This was a labor of love, more than anything.
Not necessarily, but Toby [Moskowitz] is a star economist at the University of Chicago, so obviously this was a different kind of writing than he’s used to. You know, we had a focus group of six, and that was a bedroom of kids. You don’t want to be encouraging kids to gamble on the playground, right, so how did you handle that?
Fortune: What made you and your coauthor want to write this book?
That was a lot of the point. But I think we were both surprised by how young Scorecasting skewed.
How different was writing kids’ fiction than what you’re used to at SI?
The book, out this week, is the first children’s literature effort from L. But yeah, I mean, people will see the dollar bills raining down on the cover. Did you guys seek to make it very gender inclusive?
No… But we thought there was a void to be filled here. But then you won’t go again until the last pick of the second round.”) As Mitch and Jamie work together to run a betting ring, Mitch comes to learn a lot about finance, the business of sports, and maybe a little, tiny bit about girls, too.. We’re not advocating running a betting pool–but for authenticity’s sake, we wanted some middle school tension. Sure, you’ll get a good player. Its main character Mitch doesn’t have a crush on Jamie (he swears), but he sure listens up when she instructs him to trade away his first pick in the fantasy football draft. (“Everyone wants it, and they think it’s more valuable than it really is

Things don’t get any easier for Perry as he next faces world No 6 Mark Allen, who looked impressive in defeating John Higgins 6-4 in their first-round clash.
“But it is nice because people would always ask me ‘what’s the best that you’ve done at the Masters’ and I would tell them that I’ve never won a match.
“Mark’s a tremendous player and he’s finally starting to get to the business end of tournaments regularly,” added Perry.
SNOOKER: Joe Perry believes he has more than repaid his supporters’ faith in him after finally ending his Masters hoodoo.
That seemed to suck the life out of the Chinese superstar and the world No 13 clinched victory with another century in frame nine to set up a quarter-final with Mark Allen on Friday afternoon.
But the 40-year-old is adamant he is more than capable of coming out on top.
It was the Chatteris cueman’s first win in his seventh appearance at the event and he started strongly with breaks of 79 and 103 giving him a 3-1 lead.

“I’ve got some really loyal supporters and they’ve really stuck by me for all these years considering I haven’t won anything, so it was great to get the win for them.”
